Beautiful bluebells get an informative boost

14 May 2008

Nothing says spring more than woodland covered in a haze of brilliant bluebells and visitors to one local beauty spot will leave a little more knowledgeable then when they arrived.

Bluebell Wood near the Sett Valley Trail in Hayfield was designated as a local nature reserve last year and will be getting two new information boards.

Derbyshire County Council is dedicated to improving access to and information on the many miles of Derbyshire countryside.

The boards, being put up this month, will give facts about the local wildlife, flowers, trees and shrubs. One will be mounted on the boardwalk in the heart of the wood and the second will be at Hayfield’s visitors centre.

There is an easy access path from the car park at the visitors centre running through the Bluebell Wood site making it simple for everyone to get out and enjoy the beautiful scenery.

Derbyshire County Council member for the environment Brian Lucas said: “There are miles and miles of beautiful countryside in Derbyshire just waiting to be explored.

“We want to provide visitors with as much information about their surroundings as possible.

“There is a wealth of flora and fauna to be discovered and these information boards will help point people in the right direction.”

Derbyshire County Council cares for more than 3,000 miles of public rights of way as well as maintaining many more miles of greenways, trails, canal and cycle paths.

It also looks after 80 countryside sites ranging from large country parks to small picnic sites, waterways, woodlands and even historic buildings.

The council’s countryside service offers everything from cycle hire to horse riding, nature rambles to guided walks.
