Free parenting classes available
30 January 2008
Free parenting classes are again on offer throughout the county thanks to an ongoing scheme being run by Derbyshire County Council.
The 17 week Positive Parents courses focus on helping parents who want assistance with everyday parenting skills, in addition to working with families where there are children with more challenging behaviour.
They look at issues like play, praise and rewards, effective limit setting and handling misbehaviour.
Classes for parents of children aged eight to 13 will be held at Swadlincote Learning Centre on Wednesdays between 9.30am and 11.30am and New Mills school on Wednesdays between 1pm and 3pm.
The courses start on 27 February. Crèche facilities and help with transport are available to enable parents to attend the classes.
Councillor Anne Western, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for children’s services, said: “The classes that have run so far have proved very successful.
“They help parents cope with day to day issues that crop up when dealing with children as well as meeting other parents in a supportive environment.”
To book a place on the course or to find out more contact Sarah Smith on 01629 580000 ex 5864 or contact Call Derbyshire on 08 456 058 058.
