Pupils, staff and parents had a splashing time when they celebrated the official opening of a swimming and hydrotherapy pool at a Derbyshire school.
Ashgate Croft School in Chesterfield launched a fundraising appeal in 2002 to build a £1 million swimming and hydrotherapy pool for children and adults with disabilities.
The Pool for Megan and Her Friends’ Appeal was launched by the parents of Megan Carver, a ten-year-old pupil at the school.
School and fundraising cash of £492,909 was boosted with £450,000 from Derbyshire County Council to make sure the project went ahead.
Councillor Alan Charles, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for schools, said: “Megan’s mum Jane, Julie Lomas, and the rest of the fundraising team at Ashgate Croft, have done a tremendous amount of work and had great success in getting donations for their appeal.
“We were very happy to contribute towards this asset for the school and local community.
“A swimming and hydrotherapy pool is as important as a classroom and will give pupils great learning and development opportunities.”
Headteacher Mike Meaton said: “We’re delighted the pupils and the community can now enjoy this wonderful pool.
“A lot of hard work has gone into this project and I’d like to thank all the people involved for their support and fundraising efforts.
“This new pool it is going to give pupils and local people great enjoyment for years to come.”
Jane Carver said: “I’d like to thank everyone who donated to the appeal as they have helped us to build more than a pool – they’ve helped us build the children brighter futures.”
