Free event will liberate older people

20 May 2005

Promoting health and well-being and tackling a fear of crime are top of the agenda at a free event being held for the over 50s.

Liberation Day is being held at Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens on Friday 10 June and runs from 10.30am to 3pm for people living in the High Peak and Derbyshire Dales.

A range of organisations are involved in the day, which is being supported by Derbyshire County Council, Derbyshire Constabulary, Safer Derbyshire Dales and the High Peak Community Safety Partnership.

Representatives from the organisations will be on hand at the event, being held to talk to people going along, discuss a variety of issues and offer help and advice.

Organisations involved include the University of the Third Age, Derbyshire Carers Association, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, Derbyshire Constabulary, Age Concern Derby and Derbyshire, Better Government for Older People, Victim Support Derbyshire, the Benefits Service and the Pension Service along with a host of others.

As well as the information displays there will also be refreshments and entertainment on the day, including music by the Hope Valley Big Band, Fairfield School Choir, a steel band and refreshments.

There will also be a talk on positive ageing, a performance by The Acting About Theatre Company, a home fire safety presentation, a kitchen fire display on what not to do and a crime and community safety presentation.

Derbyshire County Council cabinet member for services for older people and vulnerable adults Councillor Dave Allen said: “A lot has been packed into this event and there will be something to interest everyone.

“Safety and a fear of crime are of great concern to people, especially older people, and I am sure that by going along to the event they will be able to gather a lot of very useful information which will help to keep them safe.”

Project manager for the event Inspector Tony Dales of the Buxton Police Community Intelligence Unit said: “There has been a lot of time and commitment given by so many people to get the event up and running and I am really looking forward to the day.”
