Official opening for Frederick Gent buildings

8 July 2005

A secondary school which has been rebuilt by Derbyshire County Council in an £8.7 million scheme is to be officially opened.

Frederick Gent School in Mansfield Road, South Normanton has seen a 50-year-old timber framed building demolished, some buildings extended and others completely refurbished.

The project has involved building a new:

* Kitchen and restaurant

* Art and technology suite

* Music suite

* Main assembly/performance hall

* Dance studio

* Library

A new sports hall and changing rooms has also been built with a grant of £1.25m from the Government’s New Opportunities Fund.

The new school, which was built between July 2003 and December 2004, has also seen administration offices, an outdoor games area and extra car parking spaces created.

Councillor Alan Charles, Derbyshire County Council’s cabinet member for school planning and support, said: “Many of the old buildings had reached the end of their useful life and have now been replaced with modern 21st century facilities.

“The school has specialist status in maths and computing and the significant investment made by the county council has provided pupils and teaching staff with the facilities they need to help raise standards.”

Design work for the project was done by Derbyshire County Council and the building work carried out by contractors.

Councillor Walter Burrows, chair of the county council, will officially open the new buildings at 12.30pm on Monday 11 July following a tour of the classrooms.
