Visiting us
Derbyshire Record Office has now re-opened as a joint service combining local studies and archives.
Opening hours
We are open 9.30am to 5pm weekdays and 9.30am to 1pm every Saturday (we are closed Sundays and Bank Holidays). If you want to use a computer or microfilm (for looking at newspapers, parish registers, census, GRO indexes) we strongly advise you to book a reader's space in advance. Please contact us on 01629 538347 or email record.office@derbyshire.gov.uk.
For consulting books or archive material, it is not necessary to book a reader's space, although if you want to pre-order up to three archival items to be available for your arrival, please contact us on the above number or at the email address given. All documents must be returned by 4.45pm.
Easter Closing
The Record Office is closed on Friday 29 March and Monday 1 April. We will be open on Saturday 30 March as normal.
Registration
All customers wishing to use the archive search room to view original documents, including maps, are required to register under the County Archives Research Network [CARN] scheme. This is a national network of record offices that share one standard ticket system. These tickets are free, are valid for four years and will give you access to any record office that belongs to the Research Network.
To register for a CARN Readers' Ticket, you will need to complete a brief registration form, and provide official documentation containing your full name, printed address and signature.
Acceptable documents include:
- A driving licence (containing name, address and signature)
- Passport, cash / cheque card, credit card (containing name and signature)
- Bank statement, utility bill, medical card, council tax statement, social security book (containing name and current address).
If you already have a CARN ticket, please bring this with you.
It is advisable to bring the necessary identification with you even if you do not anticipate using original material, as you may find that some material you wish to view can only be consulted in the archive search room.
