Visiting us
Are you thinking of visiting us? This is some information you might need before coming over.

Access to resources are split between the crèche building and the Local Studies Library at County Hall.

14 April 2012 (9.30am to 4pm)

9 June 2012 (June 9.30am to 4pm)
We are closed on Sundays and Bank Holidays.
Using the Record Office
There isn't a charge for using the Record Office for historical research. All we ask is that you fill out a registration form and bring proof of your name and address from an official source, such as your driving licence, benefit book, or CARN ticket.
Please give us a call or send us an email before travelling over as space is limited and you may need to make a booking.
For official or legal enquiries, please ask the archivist on duty, who will advise about closure periods for specific records.
At present there are no facilities to sit and eat or drink at either the record office or the local studies library. You can use the County Hall canteen which is located behind the Derbyshire Local Studies Library.
Using the search room
Because archives are unique and irreplaceable, we ask you to take special care of them by using pencil only. All users are asked to leave mobile phones, cameras, coats and bags in the lockers provided. Smoking, eating and drinking are not permitted.
How to order original documents
Please note that we are currently based at County Hall, Matlock, in the former crèche building, which is situated in the lower car park. This is because our offices at New Street are being refurbished and extended.
Original documents can now only be ordered in advance, with five working days' notice. If you know the document reference numbers, you can order by phone on 01629 538347 or email record.office@derbyshire.gov.uk If you don't have the references, you can either check the finding aids in the temporary search room and fill in request slips in advance of your visit; or you can contact us to discuss what you would like to see. We can then order on your behalf.
We appreciate this is inconvenient, so we have abolished the former limit of three advance orders per person.
For further details, please see our Record Office relocation page.
