Record Office relocation

We are currently based at County Hall, Matlock, in the former crèche building, which is situated in the lower car park. This is because our offices at New Street are being refurbished and extended.

Access to resources are split between the crèche building and the Local Studies Library at County Hall.

See our page on visiting County Hall.

The crèche building

There will be a smaller public search room at the temporary premises, so there will be a few changes to our service:

  • Original documents can only be ordered in advance. Please inform us of your order as quickly as possible. The limited space means that we may be fully booked several weeks in advance.

  • If you know the document reference numbers, you can order by phone on 01629 538347 or email record.office@derbyshire.gov.uk

  • If you don't have the references, you can either check the finding aids in the temporary search room and fill in request slips in advance of your visit; or you can contact us to discuss what you would like to see. We can then order on your behalf.

  • We appreciate this is inconvenient, so we have abolished the former limit of three advance orders per person.

  • As the building work progresses, access to some or all documents may be restricted at short notice.

  • Two disabled car parking spaces will be available at the crèche building.

If you are not a 'blue badge' holder, alternative parking is available elsewhere in Matlock, for more information please follow the link at the bottom of the page.

Derbyshire Local Studies Library

All documents held on microfilms, DVDs and CDs, including most of the parish registers, will now be available to the public from the Derbyshire Local Studies Library at County Hall, Matlock.

  • All microfilms, DVDs and CDs can be accessed during your visit and will not need to be ordered in advance.

  • Microfilms readers, and the PCs to access the DVDs and CDs can be booked by phoning 01629 536579, or by emailing localstudies@derbyshire.gov.uk

  • You can check the online parish register guide to see if the register that you want is available on microfilm, DVD or as an original document.

  • You can also check for wills and letters of administration online to find out what you can see on microfilm or DVD.

  • Most Church registers and Wills can be viewed on microfilm and on DVD.

Search service

If you're one of our search service clients, we may take a little longer to respond to your search requests. This is due to anticipated delays in accessing some documents. We apologise for any inconvenience that this may cause.

The temporary relocation is due to ongoing works. The new, improved Derbyshire Record Office and Local Studies Library service is expected to reopen at our New Street site in March 2013.

Once again, we apologise for any inconvenience that this temporary situation may cause and thank you for your co-operation.
