Record Office guide

This is a comprehensive guide to the archives we hold. The guide is updated every time new acquisitions are made available. It gives a summary of each collection, and its collection reference number, which can then be used to find descriptions of specific documents.

How to search

The guide covers every type of record we hold, from schools and voluntary organisations to businesses and religious groups.

There are three ways to search it:

  1. By type of record

  2. By place

  3. By keyword

The guide works best when you combine these types of search, for instance:

  • Searching Record Type "Schools" and Place Name "Chesterfield" will bring up a list of records we hold relating to schools in Chesterfield.

  • If you are searching for Lumford Mill try Record Type "Business − Manufacturing, Sub Record Type "Textile Manufacturer" and Place Name "Bakewell".

After searching, you can find out more about a record type by clicking on it, for example, what were Petty Sessions and what period do the records cover.
