Are there any limitations on using records?

Yes. Most of our material is available to all researchers but there are limitations.

These are to protect the documents and to comply with policies and legislation. Because archives are in the Record Office, this does not mean they are in the public domain. They may still be privately owned. They may be subject to Copyright Regulations (revised 2003).

Documents may have been microfilmed on condition that further copies would not be supplied. This applies to original parish registers. Recent business records may be closed to protect owners’ interests. Because of the requirements of Data Protection and other legislation, there may be restrictions on material which is recent in date or which contains personal information.

Items may be undergoing conservation and so not be available for a while.

If you have a query about limitations, the Duty Archivist will advise you.
