What sort of records do you hold?
Derbyshire Record Office holds original documents created in Derbyshire dating from the Middle Ages to the present day.
Are there any limitations on using records?
Yes. Most of our material is available to all researchers but there are limitations. 
Can anyone use Derbyshire Record Office services?
Yes. Anyone can visit the Search Room to consult the archives.
Can I access original documents on the internet?
No. Virtually all our archival material is currently in traditional formats.
Can I get a copy of a document?
Yes, subject to copyright and conservation requirements.
Can I put copies of documents on a not-for-profit website?
No. Under Copyright Regulations, copies of copyright documents cannot be published in hard copy or electronic form without written permission. 
Can I trace my family history at the Record Office?
Yes, if your ancestors came from Derbyshire and appear in original Derbyshire records.
Do I need an appointment to visit the Record Office?
If you are undertaking family history research, you should book a microform reader in advance.
I have a CARN ticket. Do you accept this?
Yes. We accept it as identification, but you still need to complete a registration card the first time you visit.
I have a DRO number. Can you copy the item and send it to me?
If the number is a D followed by 1,2,3 or 4 numbers, this is a reference to a collection and not to items within it. 
Will someone help me with my enquiries if I visit in person?
Yes. Search Room staff will explain how to access material and the Duty Archivist can advise generally on archive sources.
Can I order documents to be ready when I arrive?
Yes. You can order up to three items in advance of your visit if you know the item reference numbers.
I have never been to Matlock. Can you send me a map of where you are?
Yes. The Record Office is accessible by car, train and bus.
I have never been to the Record Office before. Is there anything I should know?
You need proof of identity and address to register as a reader.
I have original documents I want preserved in the future.

Can I get a copy of a baptism, marriage or burial certificate from parish registers in Derbyshire Record Office?
Yes. As Diocesan Record Office, the Record Office can issue certificates from parish registers at Derbyshire Record Office.
Can I have remote access to parish registers?
I think my ancestors came from one parish and it would be helpful if I could have remote access to all the parish registers so that I can search over several centuries. How can I do this?
