Histories of towns and villages

We try to collect every book written about Derbyshire's communities, large or small.

Some towns had detailed histories written in the 19th century such as E. Truman's History of Ilkeston, 1899 but many did not. Some smaller villages still have no book of their own.

Fortunately many local history books have been written over the last few years. The Millennium provided an impetus to many villages to record their own history. Now even the smallest village may have an enthusiastic group of people at work. They produce material ranging from booklets of old photographs to detailed research. Large books covering all aspects of a small village and its history are no longer unusual.

If you want to know what has been written about a particular place contact the Local Studies library at County Hall.

If you have written a book about your local area please let us know so we can buy copies.
