Domesday survey

The Domesday Survey of 1086 is the earliest written evidence we have for many Derbyshire communities.

You can find a translation of the Domesday Survey in volume one of the Victoria County History. As well as the actual text of the survey there is a comparison between Derbyshire and other counties. There is also comment on various landowners and significant aspects of the survey.

There are other translations of the Domesday Survey including a very useful one published by Phillimore in 1978. This gives a parallel Latin and English text. It also includes a map, indexes of persons and places and an explanation of technical terms.

The Derbyshire Domesday, by David Roffe, published in 1986 is a useful short explanation of this very important document. It acts as excellent introduction to the early history of Derbyshire.
