Local studies journals

At Chesterfield and County Hall Local Studies libraries we collect and keep many newsletters and magazines. We index articles of local interest so you can easily find information on local people, places and subjects.

The best known magazine relating to Derbyshire in general is Derbyshire Life and Countryside. It contains features on towns and villages, historical and present day biographies, information on notable events past and present, together with book reviews, property sales and  social news for the county. Other titles have appeared more recently including Reflections magazine.

Derbyshire history

Journals of local history include over a century of the annual Journal of the Derbyshire Archaeological Society. This contains detailed articles on past industries, notable families and important historical topics as well as archaeology. The twice-yearly Derbyshire Miscellany (also published by the Archaeological Society) deals with all aspects of local history in a briefer but no less informative fashion. A fascinating old journal, still well worth reading, is The Reliquary, published in the late 19th century.

General history

We keep some periodicals which are not restricted to Derbyshire but are of interest to all local historians. These include Local History Magazine and the quarterly journal of the British Association for Local History, The Local Historian. East Midlands Historian, published by the University of Nottingham, contains news from Record Offices and libraries of the region, and a comprehensive list of local history publications as well as historical articles.

Special interest periodicals

There are a number of special interest publications including the Mercian Geologist (Journal of the East Midlands' Geological Society); the Railway and Canal Historical Society Journal, and the Bulletin of the Peak District Mines Historical Society, now renamed Mining History. Others include Firm and Forester (the journal of Worcestershire and Sherwood Foresters), Derbyshire Messenger (Journal of Derbyshire Postal History Society), Derbyshire Wildlife News and the Journal of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Entomological Society.

Family History interest

For family historians there are the monthly general magazines, Family Tree Magazine, Practical Family History, and Ancestors, produced by the National Archives. More specialised titles include Family History News and Digest (the official journal of the Federation of Family History Societies) and the Genealogists' Magazine (the quarterly Journal of the Society of Genealogists). The local Derbyshire Family History Society produces its own quarterly magazine, Branch News while the Chesterfield branch has its own CADFHS Magazine.
