Local Studies Library facilities

Information about the Local Studies Library at County Hall, Matlock.

The Local Studies Library is a reference collection. The books here are available for use in the library only.

However you can borrow all but the rarest items by requesting them at your own local library.

Most information can be photocopied - if copyright regulations permit. You can get copies from microfilm and fiche as well. An attractive feature of the library is that most of the collection is open access and you are welcome to browse among the shelves.

There is an extensive subject, place and name index to the collection. This brings together all information on a topic so you can select useful material. If you are unable to find what you want, or need any help or advice, the Local Studies staff  are always happy to help.

The census, newspapers and Civil Registration Indexes are on microfilm and you will need a machine to view them. We have several but they are in heavy demand so we advise you to telephone and book them in advance.

We also have a number of computers with free access to the internet and CD-ROMs. These are becoming increasingly important for both family and local history. We offer free access to www.Ancestry.com (opens in a new window) in this library.

There are public toilets and a snack bar in County Hall which provides hot meals between 12 and 1.30pm, and drinks and cold snacks throughout the day.

Any group, children, students or societies who would like additional help in using the collection can book a group visit tailored to their particular needs.
