Find out more about this year's challenge.

Starting on Saturday 16 July and running until Saturday 17 September 2016, libraries across Derbyshire will be taking part in the annual Summer Reading Challenge. This initiative is a national scheme which started in 1999 and is organised by The Reading Agency in collaboration with libraries.

This year they have joined forces with the Roald Dahl estate to produce 'The Big Friendly Read'. 2016 would have been the 100th birthday of Roald Dahl, and the challenge offers a mixture of mischief, adventure, langwitch, invention and friendship with lots of crazy animals mixed in.

Avoid the summer dip

Children who do not read or engage in activity during the holidays experience a 'summer dip'. Quotes from parents in previous years show that the challenge can help prevent this

"I think this is a brilliant idea, encouraging children to read - which is something that can normally be a struggle in the holiday."

"It's a great incentive for my children to read during the summer holidays. …particularly exploring books … would not get to read as part of the school reading programme."

Joining in the challenge

All you have to do is read six books borrowed from the library during the summer holidays.

Sign up for the challenge and you will receive a collector wallet. Each time you read a book collect one of the six different collector cards, designed by Quentin Blake. There are extracts from Dahl's most loved stories and activities on the back of every card.

And when you've finished, collect your medal and certificate. You could even come along to a presentation ceremony at your library to receive it.

Mobile app

There is a mobile app available, this features additional games and activities you can play. Not all Derbyshire libraries however will have the additional materials it mentions available for use in the library. For a guide on how to download the app and the features included see the instructions attached to this page.

Summer activities

If you're looking for a fun activity to do during the summer holidays you can wrestle with crocodiles, make fantastic foxes, try your hand at simple science or get to grips with giraffes and so much more. Check out the list of activities below which will be running across Derbyshire libraries.
