An ancient oak woodland with adjacent more recent plantations to the north.
Light shining through trees Shaw Wood is an 8.5 hectare woodland consisting mainly of oak, which is on English Nature’s List of Ancient and Semi-Natural Woodlands and is registered as a Local Wildlife Site. It has a good ground flora including carpets of bluebells in the spring.

To the north there are a further 5.4 hectares of mixed woodland planting from the reclamation in 1972 of the former South Wingfield Colliery. The site also includes the Oakerthorpe Brook, dominated by large crack willows, and an adjacent wet meadow. A series of public and concessionary footpaths cross the site.
