Chesterfield Canal

Built over 200 years ago the canal is now undergoing restoration. You can enjoy a trip on the boat or even bring your own.

Chesterfield Canal nr Tapton

The Chesterfield Canal is currently navigable for a 5 mile stretch from Chesterfield to Staveley.

On summer Sundays and Bank Holidays you can enjoy a trip on the John Varley - the trip boat run by the Chesterfield Canal Trust.

You can also purchase a licence from Tapton Lock Visitor Centre which enables you to launch your own boat on the canal.  You can enjoy fishing on the canal wherever you find a fishing platform. Permits are available from Tapton Lock Visitor Centre and from the bailiff at the bank side.

Much of the tow-path is multi-user so whether you are walking, cycling have a pram or wheelchair you can use the tow-path as far as Staveley.
