Pedal Peak Phase II − moving up a gear

Pedal Peak II is an exciting £7.5m project set up to improve cycling for leisure and day to day journeys. Four new cycle routes have been or are in the process of being created which will take cyclists and walkers into and through the Peak District National Park from the surrounding urban areas.

The main project was awarded £6.7m from the Government's National Park Cycling Ambition Fund managed by the Department for Transport between August 2013 and March 2016. We managed this project on behalf of four other authorities: Peak District National Park Authority, Staffordshire County Council, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council and Sheffield City Council.

Pedal Peak II included four main schemes and a fund to support local cycling:

White Peak Loop to connect the Monsal and High Peak Trails into Matlock and Buxton. The original project delivered 22.6km of new or improved sections and we are continuing to fund ongoing design work to fill in the missing sections

Little Don Link skirting the edge of the Peak District from Sheffield along a disused railway to join the Trans Pennine Trail in Barnsley and managed by Sheffield City Council and Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council. The original project delivered 18.7km of new or improved sections and work is continuing to complete the project.

Staffordshire Moorlands Link using the Caldon Canal towpath and signed on road routes to link Stoke on Trent with the Manifold Trail and the Roaches and managed by Staffordshire County Council. This project was completed by March 2016 with 33km of new routes built and signed.

Hope Valley Link complementing the Little John Route, a Sustrans signed Sheffield to Manchester route across the National Park by providing a new off road section along the Hope Valley. This project delivered a new 2.5km new route between Hathersage and Bamford.

Cycle Friendly Places Grant Fund operated by the Peak District National Park Authority supported 29 projects helping to create cycling friendly places along the routes. Additional European funding means that a new cycle grants scheme is continuing entitled the "Pedal Peak for Business Fund"
