Derby on Film
Derby on Film is a Renaissance East Midlands fund project to digitise Buxton Museum's film collection.
Working with Picture the Past the aim is to bring Derbyshire's film collection to a much wider audience.
The project aims to be completed by January 2011. The original film stock is currently housed at MACE; Buxton Museum has a small collection of films stored on VHS and Betamax.
Access to these near obsolete tapes is currently very limited and the tapes are slowly deteriorating.
The collection is varied and has both historically important film and film which will be of local interest.
So there are movie images of limestone quarrying, rope making, and Ashbourne's Shrovetide football, alongside Long Eaton carnival, Wirksworth well dressing and Kniveton fete.
Derby on Film will:
convert tapes to a digital format
invite local communities to review the collection and give feedback on the film
make these films available online via YouTube and Picture the Past (subject to copyright)
make the films available in libraries and museums across Derbyshire.
You can visit the Derby on Film website (opens in a new window) where there are monthly blogs, pictures and links to our Twitter, Facebook and YouTube pages.
