Learning and education
We offer a range of learning and education opportunities for schools, families and other groups both in the museum and online.
Education sessions in the museum
Schools and other groups for children and young people are welcome to visit us and there are lots of activities to take part in such as Time Detectives, Everyday Romans, Art Explorers and Arresting Solutions.
These activities can be delivered to Key Stage 1, 2, and 3.
Children learn by handling real objects, observation, recording, and drawing, working in pairs, groups and as a class. Booking is essential, and there is a small charge:
Derbyshire schools/groups (or staying in Derbyshire overnight): £1 per child
Non-Derbyshire school/group: £2 per child
All accompanying adults: free
Payment is made on the day of your visit. Cheques should be made payable to Derbyshire County Council. We accept debit and credit cards.
Please note that due to staff maternity leave, we are not taking bookings for museum-led sessions until September 2013.
Teacher-led visits visits, free of charge, are welcomed and worksheets and information to use for the Everyday Romans and Time Detectives activities can be found at the bottom of the School and Group Visits page.
Unfortunately we cannot provide any handling objects for teacher-led visits. If you would like to bring your class for a teacher-led visit then please let us know your preferred date to ensure there are no clashes.
All enquiries and bookings should be made by contacting us.
Online learning resources
We have a number of online learning resources, aimed at school groups but of interest to anyone who wants to explore our collections. There are links to the Time Detectives and History Detectives learning packages at the bottom of the page.
Informal learning
The museum is an excellent place to carry out your own programme of informal learning or to join one of the occasional classes and courses that are organised by ourselves and other organisations.
Families
Families will love visiting the museum and art gallery. Relax with toys and books in our play area or explore the exhibits together with quizzes and activities.
We run regular events throughout the year including National Science and Engineering Week, the Festival of British Archaeology and the Big Draw.
Usually there is no charge for these events but check individual listings for details. See our events page for information on what's on.
