The redesign of day services for adults with a learning disability and or who are autistic

Status: Closed

Opens: 28 March 2022 - Closes: 19 June 2022

What this consultation is about

We are proposing to redesign services to move away from traditional building-based day services in favour of offering alternative opportunities in the community.

This includes proposals to:

  • expand the council’s team of Community Connectors - trained staff who support people with learning disabilities and / or who are autistic to explore opportunities that exist in their local communities - these can include travel training, employment opportunities, social activities, direct payments, private voluntary independent sector, voluntary work, digital support, relationship building, community groups, education and learning, work experience
  • create a new support service team to provide more intensive practical support to people with learning disabilities and / or who are autistic and their families to help them get used to the changes if they went ahead
  • identify gaps in services and work with independent, private, and voluntary providers and other organisations to develop new opportunities which will capture the demands and preferences that people have notified us of in our new support request form
  • retain 4 day centres (Alderbrook, Outlook, Parkwood and No Limits) and relocate anyone that needs to continue using these by providing transport where necessary to allow them to do this
  • use a phased approach to discontinue the use of 8 day centres (Whitemoor, Newhall, Coal Aston, Carter Lane, Renishaw, Oxcroft, Whitwell and Ashbourne) where there is a lack of demand and people have already relocated or are being supported to choose other opportunities - we'll offer support to everyone through our support services

The alternative option is to keep the 12 building-based services open as they operate currently.

More information can be found in the agenda for Cabinet on Thursday, 10 March 2022, 2.00pm on the Derbyshire Democracy website.
