What the county council is doing

In September 2004 the Cabinet approved a report recommending that the council becomes a Fairtrade council. Derby is already a Fairtrade City with the involvement of Derby City Council.  Derbyshire Dales District and High Peak Borough Councils serve Fairtrade products in their catering services.

Achieving Fairtrade status means that the county council:

  • Welcomes and formally supports Fairtrade.
  • Will promote awareness of Fairtrade and Fairtrade products to its residents, departments and employees, on a regular basis through the council’s publications and by other means.
  • Will include Fairtrade and similar initiatives, where appropriate, in the county council’s quality of life strategies and supporting policies.
  • Will, where possible, purchase Fairtrade tea, coffee and other catering supplies and offer them as options in canteens and at council meetings and functions.

The county council will also encourage the Derbyshire Local Government Association and the Derbyshire Partnership Forum to consider Fairtrade issues set out below.
