Ten simple measures
Here are ten simple measures you can put into action today, which will not only cut carbon emissions but save you money too.
Turn your central heating thermostat down by 1 degree to cut your heating bills by up to 10 per cent and save money.
Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows.
Always turn off the lights when you leave a room.
Switch off appliances instead of leaving them on standby. Switching off your television will also reduce the fire risk to your home.
Unplug your mobile phone charger unless charging your phone − this often takes less time than you think − so keep checking it.
Fill your washing machine or dishwasher before switching on. If you must wash with appliances less than full use the small-load or economy load settings.
Only boil as much water as you need but remember to cover the element if you're using an electric kettle.
Make sure all your taps are turned off. In just one day, a dripping hot water tap wastes enough water to fill a bath.
Replace your light bulbs with energy saving recommended ones: just one can reduce your lighting costs by up to £78 over the lifetime of the bulb − and they last up to 12 times longer than ordinary light bulbs.
Turn off the tap while you brush you teeth.
