The winners of the 2011 waste watchers competition:

Netherthorpe School

After watching the Waste Watchers at school, four young entrepreneurs decided to set up 'Bag a Bargain'. Hannah, Amy, Harriet and Chloe explain more:

Bag a Bargain

What is it? Bag a Bargain started off when the Waste Watchers programme came into school on March 31st. We had a workshop where we discussed how to increase recycling in our school, and ideas as to how we could help. They told us about a competition which we could enter and possibly win £1000.

We came up with a charity shop idea, where we collected unwanted items, and sold them at cheap prices, to students and staff. After a lot of preparation, creating posters, informing Waste Watchers about our idea, we finally had a day when the sale could take place. (Tuesday July 19th) We collected items 3 times previous to the event, and ended up with a lot of interesting things to sell, from Trinket Boxes, to jigsaws' to make-up.

The sale went really well, with over 200 people turning up, and browsing our stock. With the art supplies, and books & DVDS, selling really well, we raised nearly £60, more than we could have ever expected. To add to this, we also won the £1000 from Waste Watchers, which added together with the money raised from the sale, will be spent on new recycling equipment for our school. This will benefit the whole school, and help to save the planet!

Thank you to everyone who donated, and to anyone who came to our sale, we will be carrying this on next year once a term.

Runners up

The William Allitt High School

The school choose the have the Waste Watchers performance during National Climate Week. Students had presentations beforehand in assemblies to explain the importance of caring for our planet.

Following the performance pupils had additional workshops looking at ideas for tacking global issues on a local level as well as recycling and litter issues that affect the whole community. Students worked together to plan how they would:

Organise a community festival, including a site plan & timetable of events.

Plan a 'Theme Day' full of activities, competitions and games.

Design an article to be included in our in-house school magazine. To include practical ways that the whole family can recycle, plus pages aimed at younger children.

Start a student leadership team, present ideas to Governors and hold assemblies to all years, to tackle Eco issues and much more.

Students also looked at how they could grow and harvest fruit in their school grounds and the possibility for produce jam as an enterprise venture
