Waste Treatment

The councils of Derbyshire have been working on finding the best solution for dealing with rubbish that cannot be recycled or composted which currently goes to landfill.

In December 2008 Derbyshire County Council and Derby City Council selected Resource Recovery Solutions (Derbyshire) Ltd (RRS), a partnership between United Utilities and Interserve, to be preferred bidder for a new Derbyshire Joint Waste Management Contract which will run from 1 April 2010 for 27 years.

The councils of Derbyshire are committed to promoting waste reduction and reuse and to increasing recycling and composting rates achieved. This contract will deal with rubbish left after recycling and composting has taken place.

Subject to planning approval, the new contract will include:

  • The development of a Waste Treatment Facility and Visitor & Education Centre at Sinfin Lane, Derby. The state of the art recycling and treatment facility proposed at Sinfin Lane will divert approximately 180,000 tonnes of waste from landfill (the equivalent weight of 26,000 double decker buses) and generate enough electricity to power 14,000 homes.

  • A new Waste Transfer Station, at Clover Nook Industrial Estate, Alfreton, Derbyshire.

  • A temporary Waste Transfer Station will also be provided at Magfern's Yard, Downing Road, Derby.

  • A future Waste Transfer Station in the Chesterfield area.

  • The transportation of waste.

  • The management of all Household Waste Recycling Centres.

Over the last few months, RRS has been listening to the views of the local community and stakeholders on proposals for three new waste facilities in Derby and Derbyshire. RRS held four public information days across Derby and Derbyshire which around 250 people attended. People also contacted RRS via the community information line and project email address, with questions and comments about the proposals.

Planning applications have now been submitted by RRS for the Waste Treatment Facility and Visitor and Education Centre at Sinfin Lane, Derby, a Waste Transfer Station at Clover Nook Industrial Park in Alfreton, Derbyshire and a temporary Waste Transfer Station at Magfern’s Yard, West Meadows Industrial Estate, Derby.
