What a load of rubbish!

Nappy Mountain

Concerned about how much rubbish is produced by using disposable nappies?

Cut your household rubbish by up to half and help the environment by choosing real nappies.

Eight million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK and mostly go to landfill.

In Derbyshire it is estimated that around 9000 tonnes of nappy waste is disposed of every year, costing Derbyshire County Council over £300,000 in disposal costs.

Follow the ten top tips below to make your real nappies greener.

  1. Wash Nappies at 60C and wraps at 40C - do not boil wash
  2. Use A-rated appliances to reduce energy and water consumption
  3. Minimise tumble drying - line dry or use an airer
  4. Don't use fabric conditioner - it is unnecessary and it reduces absorbency
  5. Use eco-friendly washing powders
  6. Try potty training early around two years of age
  7. Use real nappies for more than one child
  8. Buy second hand nappies where possible
  9. Use organic (non-bleached) products
  10. Don't iron nappies
