Regional planning

We help the staff of East Midlands Councils (formerly East Midlands Regional Assembly) prepare the East Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy and liaise with neighbouring regions.


The Government is proposing to abolish Regional Spatial Strategies in the Localism Bill. But at the current time the East Midlands Regional Spatial Strategy is still part of the development plan for the preparation of district and borough local development plans and the assessment of planning applications.

We also work jointly with the district and borough councils in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire on strategic and cross-boundary issues to assist them in preparing their local development plans.

The councils in Derbyshire are split into four different housing market areas for the purposes of sub-regional planning.

These housing market areas are working together with us, to produce either joint local development plans or aligned plans to a common timetable.

The housing market areas (HMA) covering Derbyshire and the district and borough councils within them are as follows:

Derby HMA
