Ecology has to be taken into account when a planning application is being considered. The County Ecologist advises the council on planning applications.

The Conservation and design Group holds registers of sites of importance for nature conservation, including wildlife sites and regionally important geological sites.
It works closely with many partner organisations in developing and implementing the Lowland Derbyshire and Peak District Local Biodiversity Action Plans.
