Environment
"Being an Eco School has many benefits. It is recognised as a brilliant thing by OFSTED inspectors and can also lead to the reduction of water and fuel bills.
"It has also given our school a generous amount of positive publicity. Most importantly it has also made our school cleaner, with an obvious reduction in litter and it has given the students the chance to have their say and see their ideas put into action.
"Eco Schools enables young people to think about their environment and realise what they can do to save it. It also gives them a lot of fun along the way, as I found out for myself!"
"I'm an Eco Warrior. An Eco Warrior is a person who gets ideas from all the classes so that we can try to improve the school playground and the environment."
"I was elected to an Eco Warrior through a vote. All our class voted for the most sensible person who is not afraid to what he and his class would like."
"Each committee member meets with Mrs Webster and we discuss ways of making the school a better environment and to minimise wastage. We would like to get the school looking as good as possible."
"At Scargill our aim is to be the very best Eco School in the whole of Derbyshire!"
A Teacher's view
"The school council, which is at the heart of the Eco Schools process has been hugely successful (even in an infant school!).
"Children now have ownership of much that is happening in the school and in turn take pride in their school. Since our school has been partaking in Eco Schools, the playground environment has vastly improved and so incidents of anti-social behaviour have been reduced.
"In addition the children have become more aware of environmental issues."
