Eco Schools Process:
The Eco Schools scheme has nine elements:

1. Register

Schools can register onto the Eco Schools scheme free of charge by visiting the Eco Schools website (opens in a new window).

Alternatively schools in Derbyshire can contact the Eco Schools Officer at Derbyshire County Council:
Tel: 01629 580000 ext 7568

2. Action Team
The first thing you will need to do at school is to create an Action Team, who will meet regularly to discuss your school's Eco Schools progress. Your Action Team will include pupils and teachers and may also include non-teaching staff, parents.

Take a look in the more information section on this page to download an Eco Committee attendance sheet and agenda template.

3. Environmental review
A survey is carried out to assess the environmental performance of the school. Environmental Review templates can be downloaded from the Eco Schools website (opens in a new window).

4. Action plan
A plan of action is drawn up to target the areas highlighted during the environmental review. An Action plan template can be downloaded from the Eco Schools website. (opens in a new window)

Alternatively download an Action Plan template from the more information section on this page.

5. Eco-Code
An Eco Code is your school's environmental mission statement and could be a list of environmental promises, a poster, a song or a poem! Your Eco Code should be displayed around the school.

6. Take Action
Schools can choose to minimise their school's environmental impact by working on a wide variety of topic areas from energy to transport and school grounds to healthy living! For more information and inspiration take a look at the Eco Schools Projects section.

7. Monitor and Review
To find out whether or not you are successfully achieving the targets laid out in your Action Plan, you must monitor and measure your progress. This could include weighing fruit waste composted, counting pieces of litter or reading electricity and gas meters.

8. Apply
There are three levels of awards for Eco Schools: Bronze, Silver and Green Flag. For more information on how to apply for these awards, take a look at the Eco Schools Awards section.

9. Celebrate
Achieving an Eco Schools award is something to be proud of, so why not celebrate your success?
For ideas on how to do this, visit the Eco Schools website (opens in a new window).
