Guide for older people

Your first thought should be for your safety.
There are things you can prepare to help you, the emergency service, friends and families in the event of a flood.
This information is provided by the Environment Agency and more information, including a downloadable guide, is available from their website.

The most important thing is to make sure you are safe in the event of a flood.
Find out if friends or family could offer you a place to stay when floods are predicted.
You can also contact us to find out how we will help older people in the event of a flood.
You should also:

  • Plan your escape route, particularly if you are in a bungalow.

  • If you live in a house and have window locks, always keep a key upstairs.

  • Find out from us or your district or borough council where you would be evacuated to and let family and friends know.

  • Make a list of useful numbers and keep it in a safe place. This should include, Floodline (0845 988 1188), family and friends, your local councils and your insurance company.
