Individuals
Individuals can prepare flood plans for their property and take simple steps to protect themselves and their home.
The Environment Agency runs awareness campaigns to try to make people aware of the risks of flooding and what they should do if a flood warning is given.
Homeowners whose property is at risk of flooding should take steps to protect their property.
We give more advice in our protect your home section including information on using sandbags.
You can also get real-time advice and information on flood warnings from the Environment Agency's Floodline on 0845 988 1188.
To prepare for a flood you should also:
Make yourself aware of the action which they should take in the event of flooding.
Help yourself by being prepared rather than wait for the emergency services or local authorities whose resources will be stretched.
Move property, including vehicles, to higher ground upon receiving a flood warning.
Stay aware of developing conditions by listening to local radio and/or listening to Floodline.
Riparian Landowners
Riparian landowners - people who own property of land on the bank of a river, natural watercourse or body of water - should also be aware of the following responsibilities.
Ensure the free movement of water over the land without obstruction.
Maintain the bed and banks of the watercourse
Remove debris from the watercourse even if it didn't originate on your land.
You will also need to ensure that nothing on your land could be washed away by a high flow of water and cause an obstruction further downstream.
Work on watercourses requires Land Drainage Consent from the Environment Agency and may also need planning permission from the local authority.

We have provided a list of rivers and waterways in the county that we know are prone to flooding.
This is not an exhaustive list and extreme weather can lead to flooding in areas not usually affected.
If you live near a body of water, river or other watercourse you should make sure you have a flood plan and have taken advice to protect your home.
