Historic parks and gardens

English Heritage maintains a register of parks and gardens of special historic interest. There are currently 29 entries in the register for Derbyshire, including those located within the Derbyshire part of the Peak District National Park (but excluding Derby City). Their locations can be found via www.derbyshiremapping.org.uk (opens in a new window)

Historic parks and gardens usually occur as parkland around large country houses or public parks for recreation in towns, but can include cemeteries and private gardens if considered to be of special historic interest. Most contain historic buildings or listed buildings and usually comprise part of a conservation area

No additional statutory controls apply to registered parks and gardens but they are usually afforded protection through development control policies which apply to listed buildings or conservation areas and their settings, or specifically to registered parks and gardens.
