Conservation areas

There are nearly 300 conservation areas in Derbyshire. A conservation area is “an area of special architectural or historic interest the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance”.

They can, for example, include parts of towns, whole villages or an historic landscape surrounding a country house and its related buildings.

A map base showing all conservation areas can be accessed via the Mapping Portal of the Derbyshire Partnership www.derbyshiremapping.org.uk (opens in a new window).

We provide advice for the county council, district and borough councils, developers, amenity groups and the public on historic building and other conservation area matters.

The section also gives advice and assists in the operation of  conservation area grant aid schemes which are currently running in the following conservation areas, in partnership with the relevant district or borough council:

  • Belper and Milford
  • Chapel-en-le-Frith
  • Cromford
  • Glossop
  • New Mills
  • Swadlincote
