Ecology, Geology and Biodiversity
Derbyshire has a rich and diverse natural environment, supporting a variety of habitats, species, and types of geology. Derbyshire County Council seeks to protect the natural environment when considering planning applications, and when undertaking its own work.
Ecology
Ecology has to be taken into account when a planning application is being determined. This includes considering the potential impacts of developments on habitats, wildlife, protected species and designated sites. The County Ecologist advises the council on planning applications and any other ecological issues.
Geology
Derbyshire County Council works with various partners to ensure the maintenance and development of the Derbyshire Local Geological Sites system, and the Conservation and Design Group hold a register of sites of geological importance in the county. This is used for educational and development control purposes.
Biodiversity
Derbyshire County Council works closely with many partner organisations in developing and implementing the Lowland Derbyshire and Peak District Local Biodiversity Action Plans. More information on biodiversity in Derbyshire can be found on the Derbyshire Biodiversity (opens in a new window) website.
