Physical impairment support service for pre-school children

Information for parents and carers of pre-school children who have been referred to the service.

Who are we?

A team of qualified teachers, experienced in working with children with physical impairment, who work across Derbyshire with children from 0 − 19 years.

What do we do?

We are an Advisory Service working alongside parents, carers and other workers. We aim to support you in working with your child.

How do we do it?

  • We talk to other professionals dealing with your child, eg Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.
  • Through observing your child and discussing their development, we can suggest toys and activities to encourage their physical and learning skills.
  • We work with Playgroups and Nurseries to advise them about your child's needs.
  • We can discuss what your child might need when they start school.

Where does the support take place?

  • At Home
  • In Playgroups/Nurseries
  • At other appropriate venues

How is the support given?

  • We will visit you at regular agreed times
  • We work closely with other professionals and may arrange joint visits where appropriate
  • You will receive a written visit record from the Specialist Teacher

Criteria for involvement

The acceptance of a referral to the Support Service for Physical Impairment is based on the following criteria

  • Children/young people with a physical impairment such as Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy or Osteogenesis Imperfecta (Brittle Bone Disease).
  • Children/young people with a medical condition (e.g. epilepsy or severe asthma) where this condition affects their ability to access the curriculum or environment.
  • All referrals must be in the age range 0-16 years of age or up to 19 if the young person attends a school post 16 provision (please note: referrals for children 0-5 must be made via the Local Education Authority's Early Years Special Educational Needs Panel).

A referral may be made by any person involved with the child/young person providing they have obtained parental permission.

Referrals are discussed by the full teaching team at monthly referral moderation meetings. Any child who is accepted onto the Support Service for Physical Impairment 's case-load will receive an assessment within 4 working weeks from that meeting.

Referral forms can be accessed below.
