Local inclusion officer service

The Local Inclusion Officer Service supports inclusion in schools and settings for children and young people with special educational needs. The budget for this service is £632,236 annually.

We have developed service standards linked to Derbyshire County Council’s care standards 'Putting People First' which support our work with all our partners.

Our role

  • To ensure that special educational needs provision in schools and settings meets Government and council requirements.
  • To ensure that resources are used effectively and efficiently to meet the needs of children and young people with special educational needs.

Referral

Information on pupils and schools with whom we work comes mainly through the Special Educational Needs section at County Hall, Matlock, as well as directly from schools and parents.

What do we do?

Local inclusion officers:

  • Monitor special educational needs (SEN) arrangements in mainstream schools, in line with Derbyshire’s descriptors of special educational provision - Primary (2004) and Secondary (2005).
  • Monitor the use of council funding for children and young people with special educational needs.
  • Support schools and settings in finding solutions to parental concerns.
  • Promote educational opportunities for vulnerable children and young people with special educational needs.
  • Draft statements of special educational needs and notes in lieu where appropriate and attend annual reviews of statements.
  • Contribute to decision making panels at County Hall.
  • Represent the Local Education Authority (LEA) at certain special educational needs tribunals.
  • Provide training and support to schools and other agencies, including school governors.
  • Contribute to local SEN coordinator and teaching assistant support groups.
  • Work closely with other education support services as well as health and social services.
  • Support LEA projects which promote and develop special educational needs provision and inclusion.
