Sustainable modes of travel strategy
The Government has asked us to prepare a plan (or 'strategy') to explain how we intend to encourage children and their parents to make less use of the car for journeys to and from school. On this page you can find our sustainable school transport plan.
Instead of using the car we would like to encourage children to walk, cycle or take the bus.
These forms of transport, sometimes referred to as 'sustainable transport', help to reduce congestion outside schools, are generally healthier and cause less damage to the environment.
Our strategy - which we are still developing - provides an assessment of the travel and transport needs of children and young people, a description (or 'audit') of the current situation, and an explanation of how we intend to promote sustainable travel to school.
Some of the more frequently asked questions about school transport are answered on our school transport page.
The following documents provide more detailed information about our plans to promote more sustainable travel to schools and can be downloaded from the more information section.
Here is a summary of what each of the documents contains. Together they form our sustainable school transport strategy.
Part A: What is a Sustainable Modes of Travel Strategy?
This section explains the scope of the plan and why we think it is important. It also explains how it links to other processes such as the Local Transport Plan and school travel plans.
Part B1: What is the situation in Derbyshire? - Introduction
This is the introduction to the strategy and provides a general overview including some statistics about the numbers of children in Derbyshire and the number and location of schools.
Part B2: What is the situation in Derbyshire? - An assessment of travel and transport needs
This section uses tables, diagrams and a map to explain how Derbyshire children currently travel to school. It also provides a summary of what pupils have told us about their own preferences.
Part B3: What is the situation in Derbyshire? - An audit of travel and transport infrastructure
This outlines the various facilities (roads, bus services, cycle routes etc) that pupils use to get to school. It provides links to sources of more detailed information.
Part B4: What is the situation in Derbyshire? - Infrastructure barriers
This section uses the results of School Travel Plan surveys to explain what pupils and students see as the main influence on their choice of travel. It focuses in particular on what they see as preventing them switching to a different means of transport.
Part C: What will happen in Derbyshire in the future?
This outlines the key elements of Derbyshire's strategy and explains how these will be developed in the future.
Summary table
