Post 16 travel
Post 16 students don't receive free transport to school or college but can still make use of a range of services. However, it is usual for students who have been attending a special school to continue to receive free travel post 16.
Students who don't receive free school or college transport, but who are in full time education, can receive discounted travel on public transport with a b_line card.
This can be used up until the age of 19 and also entitles the holder to a range of discounts at local shops and attractions.
You can find out more on the b_line website (opens in a new window).
Students with special education needs
Students who have been attending a special school usually continue to receive free transport for their post 16 studies.
The criteria for free travel for learners with special education needs (SEN) and/or a disability (as recognised under the Disability Descrimination Act 1995) is described below.
Criteria for travel for students with special education needs and/or a disability
It is usual that any student who have a Statement of Special Education Needs from us will have transport provided to the nearest school or college able to make provision for that students needs.
Students who have been attending a special school usually continue to receive free transport until they leave school.
For students who leave school to attend a college free transport will be provided up until the term in which their 25th birthday fall, where:
- A senior medical practitioner / consultant, suitably qualified to comment on the student's disability, provides written evidence that the student is unable to use the existing public or contract services available. (Where a student is progressing directly from school, we will have current information about transport requirements to inform any decision).
- The college is either the nearest college site capable of making provision for the student's special educational need and/or disability, in order to pursue an appropriate course in line with the student's choice; or is a funded placement - find out more by visiting Directgov (opens in a new window).
Any student who doesn't meet this criteria and is refused free transport will be able to appeal against this decision.
In an appeal their and their family's circumstances will be considered against our policy and an appeal hearing will be arranged. The hearing will be fully accessible for students with special education needs.
We can also provide mobility/independence training for students who face difficulty with transport.
