Chaperone service

I have been told that my child must have a chaperone if they are working in the entertainment, modelling or paid sport sectors. What is a chaperone?

When a child or young person works in entertainment or modelling they have to be over seen by a "Chaperone" (sometimes called a "Matron"). Chaperones are normally provided by the employing agency.

They can be of either sex but have to be licensed and have under gone a criminal records check to ensure that children are safe with them. The chaperone's job is to make certain that the child does not work too many hours without proper breaks, that education is provided in certain circumstances and that all the legislation designed for the health, safety and welfare of the child is observed. If a chaperone is paid it is the responsibility of the employing agency and not the local government.

In order to be licensed any one wishing to become a chaperone has to be interviewed by an officer of the Education Welfare Service and be criminal records checked. The check can take several weeks and this should be planned for. They will be instructed in the responsibilities of the job and provided with a copy of the laws that have to be observed.

For more details, or to arrange for an interview, contact the Education Welfare Service at the appropriate area office.
