Children with musical instruments at school Here you can find out about the work of the Music Partnership in primary schools

"All children at KS2 should have access to at least a year of whole class instrumental and vocal tuition"

Lord Adonis
Parliamentary Under Secretary of State Schools

Each school participating in Derbyshire Wider Opportunities Programmes will receive from the Music Partnership:

  • Weekly sessions, across the whole school year, for a whole class or year group of KS2 pupils for 45 minutes' contact time

  • Skilled and experienced teachers from the Music Partnership

  • Free loan of instruments for the duration of the Programme and any subsequent take up

  • Take up lessons offered following initial programme allowing pupils to continue learning in groups of 10-15 at a nominal charge to the school and/or pupil.

Wider Opportunities Programmes look to 'normalise' instrumental teaching, bringing the tuition into the classroom rather than small numbers leaving the classroom to go elsewhere for their tuition. Hence delivery will be during curriculum time.

Wider Opportunities Programmes are not intended to replace the current small group or individual instrumental teaching which already exists in school; rather, they enable all pupils in a class to experience a vibrant foundation year. Pupils' progress in instrumental learning rely on small group instrumental tuition, following on from a Wider Opportunities Programme.

Wider Opportunities Programmes are not intended to replace the existing music curriculum provision through the weekly class music lesson, but rather enhance it.

There will be a 'performance' or concert at the end of the Programme and probably mid-way too.
