Designing Sustainable Neighbourhoods

Schools' Education Pack

A resource pack which provides the opportunity to teach your children about the built environment and how it has a direct effect on the quality of their lives. It is designed to be used in schools with children at Key Stage two.

In working through the activities in this pack the children will come to understand why the towns and villages where they live look the way they do. They will learn how towns and villages grow and change. They will learn to value the good aspects of their environment and realise that the negative aspects can be changed. They will develop the ability to participate in the decisions that shape our environment.

The activities in the pack would enhance teaching in many areas of the Key Stage two National Curriculum including:

  • Geographical Enquiry and Skills
  • Knowledge and understanding of places
  • Knowledge and understanding of patterns and processes
  • Knoeledge and understanding of environmental change and sustainable development
  • Breadth of Study - a locality in the United Kingdom
  • Bredth of Study - Themes - settlements, environmental issues and change, local studies and fieldwork

The pack contains five sections each teaching one aspect about our environment. These are:

  • Red Section − Accessible neighbourhoods.
  • Blue Section − Variety within your neighbourhood.
  • Orange Section − Safe neighbourhood streets.
  • Purple Section − Reading your neighbourhood.
  • Green Section − Friendly neighbourhood buildings.

The pack was produced by the Environmental Services Department urban design section and the environmental studies service and is available to download as a set of PDF files (see the links below).
