Learning outside the classroom - Middleton Top, Black Rocks and High Peak Junction
Middleton Top lies between the villages of Cromford and Wirksworth in the Derbyshire Dales and offers a wonderful variety of fieldwork possibilities for children of all ages.
It lies alongside the High Peak Trail, a trail which follows the course of the former Cromford and High Peak Railway, one of the oldest railways in the world!
From Middleton Top groups can easily walk to Black Rocks and High Peak Junction to provide a wealth of learning opportunities for pupils of all ages.
Your group can hire bikes, visit the engine house, use the various visitor centres, take part in orienteering, have a go on a working forge, take part in a an audio tours, pond dipping and much more!

A series of on site activities have been developed for Middleton Top and are designed to be used by teachers and adult leaders, with little pre knowledge of the site. These can be downloaded here or pre-prepared packs are available to borrow from Middleton Top Visitor Centre.
Middleton Top Picture Orienteering Trail − using photographs and viewpoints on site to develop compass and direction skills.
Middleton Top Photo Trails for Key Stage 1 and 2 − using photographs and maps to tour the site, gather information and learn more about the area.
Middleton Top Old Photograph Comparison Trail − using old photographs of the Middleton Top area and looking at the present site groups can look at what has changed and stayed the same on this historical site.
