21st century education

The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme will radically transform teaching and learning.

The Building Schools for the Future (BSF) capital investment in the buildings, associated technology and new ways of teaching and learning will transform the school estate and enable schools to rethink how teachers teach and learners learn.

The council will ensure the designs of new and inspiring educational spaces, along with the innovative use of ICT, deliver the vision for learning in the 21st century.

This investment will enable schools to make a step change in performance to raise the attainment of each individual in the learning community.

The investment will improve performance in Derbyshire at GCSE five A*-C to five per cent above that without the BSF investment. The investment from the BSF programme will give a physical and psychological boost to communities, initially meeting the needs of the most deprived areas of the county and those with the lowest levels of educational attainment. The specific outputs will be:

  • a broader curriculum and more varied pedagogy
  • quality remodelled buildings and facilities whose designs add prestige to education and are a source of pride to local communities
  • greater personalised learning opportunities supported by a new ICT infrastructure
  • an environment conducive to changes in pedagogy to meet the varied needs of individual learners
  • embedded ICT facilities via a managed service to support changing pedagogy
  • designs which address the management of behaviour and provide a secure environment
  • ensuring a collaborative environment and approach to curriculum provision and vocational learning
  • dedicated specialisms at each schools
  • improved sporting and integrated community facilities
  • more efficient and sustainable environments.

Derbyshire's BSF programme will develop the concept of learning communities in which all education and training providers in an area work together to offer the full range of curriculum choice to students.

This collaborative working and the enhanced services provided through BSF will meet the needs of students and the local community.

These collaborative arrangements work between schools, colleges and other training and work based learning providers will significantly increase choice for students and the diversity of services across the whole county.

It will deliver the 14-19 agenda but will also lead to changes in the structure of the school day to help access to the full range of curriculum opportunities.
