Education & learning
The admission arrangements for maintained schools in Derbyshire have been determined for the 2010/11 school year.
We are now consulting on schools' admission arrangements for 2011/12.
Community and controlled schools
The admission arrangements for 2010/11 are similar to the current arrangements for 2009/10 apart from some minor changes indicated below and the following amendments to published admission numbers:
All of the changes above are the result of discussions with headteachers and governing bodies regarding changes to the net capacity of the schools concerned.
Heritage Mathematics and Computing Specialist School, Clowne from 240 to 200.
As part of the Building Schools for the Future programme this school is subject to a significant re-build, which represents a total re-build with the exception of the existing sports hall. It is anticipated that the building will be complete for September 2010 to accept the new admissions for that year.
Model Village Primary School, Shirebrook from 40 to 30.
As part of the Primary Capital Strategy, a new school will be opened in September 2010 which will accommodate 210 pupils – a one form entry primary school. Therefore, a change to the published admission number that reflects this reduction in size has been agreed. We have determined a reduction in the published admission number from 40 to 30 to reflect the capital investment project being undertaken currently which will create a single building for the primary school on the former junior school site.
Tibshelf School from 123 to 160.
This is as indicated in the statutory proposal for the expansion of the school on a new site.
Schools with published admission numbers (PAN) less than the Indicative Admission Number (IAN)
This applies to the following schools:
Brooklands Primary School, Long Eaton - PAN 60 (IAN 63)
This has been the subject of consultation with parents and the community.
Duffield Meadows Primary School – PAN 40 (IAN 42)
This is to facilitate KS1 legislation requirements.
Kirkstead Junior School, Pinxton – PAN 56 (IAN 62)
There is a capital project to address accommodation issues at the school and the net capacity and PAN will be reviewed on completion of the project. At this stage, cognisance will be taken of the PAN at the infant schools in Pinxton, as well as accommodation factors.
Marlpool Junior School, Heanor – PAN 47 (IAN 52)
This is to facilitate class organisation within the school.
Parkside Community Junior School, Ashbourne – PAN 74(IAN 79)
This is to facilitate class organisation within the school.
Richardson Endowed Primary School, Smalley – PAN 20 (IAN 22)
This is to facilitate KS1 legislation requirements.
Spire Junior School, Chesterfield – PAN 50 (IAN 51)
This is to facilitate class organisation within the school.
Springwell Community School, Staveley – PAN 180 (IAN 191)
This is the subject of consultation relating to Building Schools for the Future.
Wirksworth CE (Controlled ) Infant School – PAN 30 (IAN 36)
This is to facilitate KS1 legislation requirements.
Proposal in respect of residency based on shared responsibility for a child
Current arrangements are that where an application includes more than one address due to shared parental responsibility, parents and carers are required to submit full details to enable us to determine which address to use for the purpose of admission.
This is problematic in circumstances where parents state that the child resides equally at both addresses.
In such circumstances we will use the address where the child resides for the majority of the week (eg wakes up between Monday to Friday).
Where we are unable to reach a decision based on the information received, the place of residency will be the address used (at the time of admissions application) for claiming Child Benefit and where appropriate Child Tax Credits. Supporting information will be required.
Voluntary aided, foundation and academy schools:
You can read the admission arrangements by downloading the relevant document from the related documents section.
No significant changes have been made to the co-ordinated scheme for the 2010/11 admissions round.
The closing date for applications will be 23 October 2009, preferences forwarded to other local authorities by 13 November 2009 and to foundation and aided schools/academies by 27 November 2009.
These will confirm completed preferences ranking by 11 December 2009.
The exchange of information with other local authorities will be 8 January 2010.
We will apply the scheme by 5 February 2010 and the national offer day will be 1 March 2010. Offers will be posted by 2nd class post.
Waiting lists
The period for holding waiting lists under the coordinated scheme will be extended from the end of September until the end of Autumn Term 1 in the academic year of admission.
After this date waiting lists for community and controlled schools will cease though aided and foundation schools may keep them longer, in which case they should specify if so and for how long, including the precise arrangements in their own published admission arrangements.

Admission arrangements – 2010/11
Our current general arrangements for the management of admissions, published admission numbers, admissions’ criteria and related information for parents are set out in “How to apply for a place at Primary School – A guide for parents 2009/10” and “How to apply for a place at Secondary School – A guide for parents 2009/10”
Apart from the above no significant changes have been made to the arrangements for 2010/11.
Objections
Parent(s) of a child who has attained the age of two but who is not above compulsory school age can submit objections if they consider that the determined admission arrangements do not comply with the law or the mandatory requirements of the School Admissions Code. In relation to an objection to arrangements for admission for sixth form education, parent(s) of a child eligible to apply to the school now or in the future can submit an objection.
Parent(s) of a child who has attained the age of two and who is receiving primary education can refer an objection to an admission number that is lower than the indicated admission number.
Objections to the schools’ adjudicator on unlawful aspects of the arrangements can be submitted by individual parent(s), but the adjudicator must receive objections from 10 or more parents before a decision can be made on objections to admission numbers.
Adjudicators work independently of the Department for Children, Schools and Families and from each other on objections to admission arrangements.
Objections must be submitted in writing by 31 July 2009 to:
