Schools and colleges

When the time comes for your child to start school, we provide a wide variety of information to help make the change as easy as possible.

We tell you what you should look for when choosing the right school for your child, and what you need to know in order to get a school place for your child.

In addition, we provide advice on how you can support your child and whether you may be able to receive extra help from us.

In Derbyshire, we also provide a comprehensive range of out of school activities which aim to enhance the education your child receives.

Making the right choice of school for your child

Every school is different. Each has many individual qualities that make it unique, from on-site facilities and extra-curricular activities to class sizes and the strength of its links with other schools and the community.

The best way for you to decide whether a school is the right one for your child is to take a look for yourself. Any Headteacher will be happy to show you round their school and talk about the benefits it can offer your child.

You may also like to talk to the teachers and other parents to get a better idea of what the school is like and how it will suit your child's temperament and abilities.

Each school has to issue a prospectus, which will give additional information about school policies on behaviour, homework, special needs provision and so on. It will also contain a summary of the school's key stage and exam results. The prospectus is available upon request from the school.
