Religious grounds

The County Council took the decision in March 2014 to withdraw transport subsidies for bus services which operate to faith schools as part of a package of measures to help the Authority find savings of £157m by 2018. Contracted transport to faith schools will therefore no longer be provided by the County Council from September 2016.

If you are in receipt of benefit

The Authority will continue to have a duty to provide free school transport for children of primary age and those aged 11-16 who are entitled to free school meals or whose families receive the maximum level of working tax credit as follows:

  • Primary age children to a school which is the nearest suitable school and over two miles from the home address

  • Children aged 11-16 to any one of the three nearest suitable schools where the home to school distance is between two and six miles. Where the school is preferred on the grounds of religion or belief, the distance is between two and fifteen miles and the school is the nearest appropriate school

If you wish to apply for assistance with transport in accordance with these criteria, please complete the following Extended Rights section.

Extended rights

Only complete this section if you are applying for income assessed home to school transport.

If you are applying for transport assistance in accordance with the Extended Rights Criteria, please give your National Insurance number

If your child is of primary age and eligible and registered for free school meals, or you are receiving the maximum level of Working Tax Credit and can provide a copy of your current Tax Credit Award Notice (Form TC602) or a recent letter from the benefits agency confirming receipt of maximum Working Tax Credit, your child will be entitled to free transport to a school which is the nearest suitable school to your home address and over two miles distance.

If your child is of secondary school age (aged 11-16, school year 7-11) and:

  • Is eligible and registered for free school meals
OR
  • You are receiving the maximum level of Working Tax Credit and can provide a copy of your latest Tax Credit Award Notice (form TC602) or a recent letter from the benefits agency confirming receipt of maximum Working Tax Credit
Your child will have an additional entitlement to transport to either:
  • One of the three nearest suitable schools to where you live that is between two and six miles from your home
OR
  • The nearest school that is between two and 15 miles from your home, preferred on the grounds of parental religious or philosophical beliefs (you must provide supporting written evidence as to why and how the school meets your religious and philosophical beliefs.)
Road routes will be used for any distance measurements over three miles linked to benefit entitlement.
Please note: for income assessed home to school transport, assistance will only be provided whilst you are in receipt of qualifying benefits. Transport assistance cannot therefore be guaranteed for the entire period of the attendance at the school. As Working Tax Credit is an annual award, families receiving assistance on this basis will need to reapply each year.

I certify that I have parental responsibility for the child named and that the information given is true to the best of my knowledge. I understand that any false or deliberately misleading information given on this form or in support of this application may render this application invalid and could lead to the withdrawal of transport assistance. I agree to notify the Authority of any change in address, benefit entitlement or any other circumstances which might affect transport eligibility.

If this is not provided, your application will be refused. Find out if you are eligible to get tax credits at https://www.gov.uk/tax-credits-calculator (opens in a new window)
