Apply for a school place

We deal with admissions for places at primary, infant, junior and secondary schools.


Decisions on applications for children starting reception classes and transferring to junior schools in September 2014 were emailed on 16 April 2014. Alternatively you can log on to view the place offered (opens in a new window).

If your child is due to start primary, junior or secondary education and you live in Derbyshire you should apply to us even if the school you want is located in the area of another council.

If you live outside Derbyshire you should apply through your home council even if you want to apply for a place at a Derbyshire school. You can find your home council through the Gov.UK website (opens in a new window).

Applying for primary, infant and junior school places

If your child was born between 1 September 2009 and 31 August 2010 you should have applied for their infant/primary school place by 15 January 2014. They will eligible to start school in September 2014. Decisions were notified on 16 April 2014 but you can still make a late application online (opens in a new window).

If your child was born between 1 September 2006 and 31 August 2007 and is in their last year at infant school you should have applied for their junior place by 15 January 2014. Decisions were notified on 16 April 2014 but you can still make a late application online (opens in a new window).

If your child attends a school outside of Derbyshire which operates a different pattern of education and they are due to transfer primary school phase in September 2014 you should have applied for their school place by 15 January 2014. Decisions were notified on 16 April 2014 but you can still make a late application using our online junior late application facility (opens in a new window).

If you're unhappy with the decision you can make an appeal. You can do this online and more information can be found on the primary appeals web page.

Applications for children due to start infant, primary and junior schools in September 2015 will open on 10 November 2014. Further information will be available on the site at that time.

Apply for a secondary school place

If your child was born between 1 September 2002 and 31 August 2003 and is in their last year of primary school you should have applied for their secondary school place by 31 October 2013. They will start school in September 2014. Decisions were notified on 16 April 2014 but you can still make a late application online (opens in a new window).

If your child attends a school outside of Derbyshire which operates a different pattern of education and they are due to transfer to secondary school in September 2014, you should also have applied for their place by 31 October 2013. . Decisions were notified on 16 April 2014 but you can still make a late application online (opens in a new window).

Applications for children due to start secondary schools in September 2015 will open on 8 September 2014. Further information will be available on the site at that time.

Changing school at other times

You may want to apply for your child to change schools other than when they are due to start primary, junior or secondary education. This could be because of a change of address.

If you want to apply for a place at a school in Derbyshire, you can do this online. We've added guidance in the changing schools section (opens in a new window) to help you through the process. Please note that we cannot accept applications earlier than one term in advance of when the place is required.
