Early Intervention Team

We work across the county, with infant departments in schools to support children who show early signs of difficulties in school. We work with small groups of children and individual pupils.

What is the Early Intervention Team?

Our team works to support children in their mainstream school for a part-time, temporary period. We then work closely with the school to enable the pupils to return to their class full-time.

Who do we work with?

We work with young children in their mainstream school, mainly children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2. We may talk to other professionals who have already met you or your child.

When does the Early Intervention Team work with children and young people?

Schools request support from our team for a group of children. The school will have identified the children as having difficulties settling into school. They may special needs or have a statement of special educational needs.

How does the Early Intervention Team work with the child?

Early Intervention Team is based in a host school usually for two (New) school terms. Early Intervention Team staff may do the following things

  • Talk to you about any concerns you may have about your child
  • Talk to your child's teachers about their progress in school
  • Observe your child in the classroom or playground
  • With your permission talk to your child
  • Look at your child's strengths
  • Check that the right targets are being set and the best strategies are being used to help the child meet their targets
  • Work with the children in a Nurture Group

What is a Nurture Group?

A Nurture Group is a small group of children who work with two adults for five half a days a week. The adults work together to provide a structured and predictable environment where children can learn the skills needed to be successful in the larger classroom. The teams work to provide

  • Models of good behaviour
  • Support for positive emotional and social growth
  • Support for language development
  • Social learning through co-operative play

What will happen then?

When we leave the school we will work with the school and parents or carers to draw up a plan to continue to help your child. We also involve the child in the plans. If your child still needs extra support we will include a member of the Behaviour Support Team in these plans.

How can I contact the Early Intervention Team?

If you are worried about your child's behaviour at school, talk to the school about your concerns. They will know if they can help your child or whether they need to contact the County Behaviour Support Service Early Intervention Team or perhaps involve another service.
