Early Years Special Educational Needs Service
The Early Years Special Educational Needs Service (EYSENS) provides county wide support for young children who have significant learning needs. The service works with children from birth until they go to school. With parental permission, anyone (including parents) can make a referral to the service. While your child meets the service criteria, the EYSENS will regularly assess him or her and provide advice on strategies, approaches and targets. Regular reports on progress are provided and the service works closely with any other professionals involved with your child. The service provides training courses for both parents and practitioners. The service consists of The Derbyshire Portage Service (DPS) and The Early Years Special Educational Needs Teaching Service (EYSENTS). All members of the service have experience and expertise in working with children who need extra help and encouragement to learn. Portage Home Visitors work with parents and children at home, supporting you to encourage your child's development by suggesting activities and resources to make learning fun. Just before your child starts at an early years setting, your child's support will transfer from a Portage Home Visitor to a Specialist teacher who will support your child's learning in the setting. The teacher will maintain regular contact with you and may still carry out the occasional visit to home. When it is time for your child to start school, your child's specialist teacher will support both you and your child through this process. Karen Waring is the head of the EYSENS and the team has three offices across the county: Chesterfield: EYSEN, CAYA, DCC, School Road, Chesterfield, S41 8LJ.
